Where We Mourn the Loss of Some Trees

Early this spring, the city went house to house and trimmed trees that were overhanging streets, alleys and power lines.  They trim trees near power lines every year, but this year, they spent weeks trimming trees.

I was happy that the city was paying attention to our neighborhood and taking care of things, but I really missed their shade this summer.

That led people to thinking about the trees that hadn't been trimmed - the ones that were squarely within the property lines, and more people trimmed these other trees. Others decided that instead of trimming a tree, they might be better off taking it down entirely.

I was one of those people too, so I'm not blaming anybody.  I had a diseased tree that worried me since it kept dropping big dead branches, and I didn't want it to fall on any property or hurt anyone.

But we can mourn their loss anyway, and thank them for their service.  This collage is of pictures I took all on one day.  I tried to make sure to only take one picture of each tree, but can't guarantee that there aren't any duplicates.  These aren't the trees that were cut down this year (I've been taking pictures of those throughout the year, so they aren't as easy to find.)  Most of these trees were cut several years ago.

This is sad, I understand that loss. We've cut down our share around here too; to clean out so that other trees can grow strong and healthy or, like you, to remove diseased trees. It's always sad when I recognize how long that tree took to grow in that very spot. God cleared our lot for us back in June a few years ago via a 'microburst"; I still mourn that loss. http://strawberrypatchquiltworks.blogspot.com/2013/06/aftermath.html

It's tricky, isn't it? It's good for us to live surrounded by trees - feeds the soul - but then the practicalities intervene. I guess the diseased ones, like yours, would fall anyway, but it's such a shame when healthy trees are taken down.

Good to at least been around the trees for a while, although of course sad when things have to go.
We live on smaller lots here, people may have one tree and a palm tree on their property. Right now we have three trees. A California Oak, a fig tree that produces only one or two each year, and a lime tree that produces the hardest fruit (I can never use them). We had more and different trees that are gone now. One was diseased, one dropped these sharp things so I couldn't walk barefoot in the yard, and five palm trees that grew so tall it seemed irresponsible to ask someone to go up that high to trim them. Lived a long time with the stumps - but finally had them all removed. Boy, I'm chatting a lot today! Thanks for sharing and getting me thinking! : )
