2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 17

Tanya shared her watercolor paintings about her trip to see the cherry blossoms and I was inspired to make my own painting on an index card based on her trip.

I am still decorating the index cards from time to time. The thing in the back that holds the cards has broken so I am going to have to fill up the box to keep everything intact.

The last time I showed you the box is 2020. Here is what the box looks like now. I have a lot done, but I don't make them every day, and as you can see, there are plenty of blank index cards left to decorate.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 17

I have started making the parts for the stars of the Spicy Stars blocks, even though the Overtime has started. I worked during my breaks, which is a great bonus for working from home. It is so much fun to see how the flavor of the block changes as I stack more blocks on top of the layout.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 16

I spent this week making parts for the Spicy Stars blocks, even though the Overtime has started. I worked during my breaks, and sometimes in my rush to get a good amount done, I made some mistakes which required ripping.I have the alternate blocks almost done and will be working on the stars this week.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 15

I usually get my books from the library, and return them reluctantly when the library requires them back. Once in a while, though, there is a book from the library that I feel I just have to own

This book, Fabrics of FairyTale, is one of them. The library had a hardcover copy. I was worried about buying a used paperback book from a thrift store online, but it turned out to be a good gamble, because this one comes with CDs. I haven't listened to the CDs yet.

The author looked for fairy tales that were about textiles.

The beautiful illustrations provide lots of inspiration for future quilts.

I spent this week making parts for the Spicy Stars blocks. The overtime has started so it will be more difficult to keep the 100% in the next few weeks.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 14

When I showed you Fear of the Missed Deadline, I was in a hurry to get finished on time and the lighting wasn't very good that day, so I am showing it to you again in better lighting. I cut off the loose threads after taking the picture. This quilt doesn't get to keep loose threads like Whose Rights does.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 14

Happy Easter! I spent the little bits of time I could find to make the Whose Rights quilt I showed you yesterday. Every time I have even a fleeting thought that I should focus my time on already started quilts, I rebel and start a new one.

Quilt Reveal: Whose Rights?

In my last post, I showed you my finished Boundless quilt. One of the last things I did on that quilt was add applique to the diamonds that are in the quilt.

As I cut the applique, I collected the cutouts on the table. A sane quilter would have simply swiped the cuttings into a trash can without a thought and decided what to have for dinner. A smart quilter would have cut the applique over a trash can and the cuttings would already be in the trash.

But me?  I thought, hmm, these pieces have fusible on them. What can I do with them? I decided to fuse them to a background. I added all of the tear drop shapes in the center, mandala style. The little rectangular pieces looked like they belonged on the ground, maybe grass or boats. Like a Rorschach test, people can decide what it looks like to them.

But when I looked at what I had done, I saw bullets in the mandala, and caskets or funeral pyres in the rectangular pieces. Really, am I going to make a political quilt? The only rule about improv that I know is that you say "Yes, and". So I decided to roll with it and make a political quilt.

To be fair, if I had been a part of a challenge where I had to make a political quilt, this would have been the cause I would choose for it.

I quilted each letter to secure it, and secured the fused applique pieces with straight lines.

Since this is a complicated, messy topic, and gun violence is messy, I added the thread clippings on the quilt and also secured them with the quilting. I don't know what the solution is, but I do think we should keep trying until we figure it out.

To me, it seems like the gun rights people have the loudest voices, especially in our government, so I made their words loud with big bold letters. The quilting lines makes me think of prisons, and I think we need prison reform. The corrupt politicians who support guns instead of supporting people are the ones who belong in prison.

The little bumps on these pieces made me think of people pushing against the casket, saying "gun rights? what about our rights?" I embroidered their rights in a small print. My heart has been heavy about lives that are cut short by gun violence, so I left it incomplete. Ever since the Columbine school shooting, and maybe even earlier, I have been amazed that the country is complacent and letting this situation go on and get even worse.

The red in the binding was difficult to make because of the bulk, but it represents blood on our hands as we are holding the quilt. We all have blood on our hands for continuing to vote for the corrupt politicians and the ineffective ones.

Since I started making this quilt last week, there have been two news events I heard about gun violence. First, I learned that more children die of gun violence in the U.S. than any other cause. Do we really need extreme stats before we do something? The other is about two Tennessee state representatives, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, being expelled from the House for participating in a protest in favor of gun control.

The back of the quilt is a novelty print to represent for my hope for the future, where everyone gets to enjoy their lives.

Quilt Reveal: Boundless

Here is the formal introduction of Boundless. This quilt was started as a part of the Dust Off An Old Book blog hop. I started almost a month before my post day, but I ran out of time. I presented an unfinished quilt on my blog hop day.

I started with a jelly roll, some background fabric, and the book 100 Quilts. Although I could make a bigger quilt, I wanted to have a quilt that is a good size for my rotating display behind my couch.

I added some applique in the diamonds because it was a a fast and easy quilt to make and I wasn't finished working on it. It adds a little extra to make my quilt a little different.

Since I like to put interesting dates on quilts, when I realized it was April 1st, I decided to make a little push to get it done on 4/1/23.

More Progress on Boundless

I started last week's post but decided to wait to get a picture, so here it is.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 12

Like last week, it was difficult to eek out time every day, but I managed to finish quilting and apply the machine binding on the Boundless quilt. I am now working on stitching the binding down to the back. I also spent a little time cutting fabric for Unallocated scrap quilt. I don't have much time to quilt, and need to get away from the computer so I can't spend much time with blog posts when I could be stitching.

This week was more exciting. Mary Fons showed my Zou the Elephant quilt on the Quilt Nerd Show.

I finished the binding on Boundless quilt. Since it was made as a part of the Dust off An Old Quilt Book blog hop, I dusted off another book, and chose a design. The original plan was to embroider a design in the diamonds, redwork style

But when I opened the drawer to see if I had some freezer paper or press n seal, I found some fusible and I decided to use the leftover binding to add some applique instead. The design is exactly the size of the binding strip.

Zoey approves. There is plenty of white space to let the diamonds shine but adds that extra that gives the maximalist touch.

2023: 15 Minutes to Stitch Week 13

This week, I hand stitched down the binding on the Boundless quilt, chose a design and added applique to the diamonds.
