Quilt Reveal: Transportation Postcard

When Carol announced that the theme for this month's blog hop is transportation, I was really excited because I have a trip around the world quilt that is waiting for applique. My plan is to add a train, a plane, a car, a covered wagon, and other applique around the border of the quilt. But I had to decide which direction all these motifs should go.

This picture does no show the wide border.

Should I add them all up in the same direction so that it would look good in a wall hanging?

Or maybe I should have all the wheels be close to the quilt top so it would look good on a table.

How about putting them close to the binding so that it would look good when draped off a table.

Plus I have to find motifs that look like they belong together.

Since I am working right now, I didn't find time to make all of these decisions. But I recently came across this postcard I had made a while ago. So I made a decision to make a small postcard. This will be a good warm up for the border. I think I am going to use a different, slightly more complicated plane.

I added batting between the front and the back, but to give it some structure, I added a piece of cardboard.

Here is the finished postcard.

This is the back just to prove it is a postcard.

I am hoping to continue with the UFO so that I can make more progress on it this year, but for now the postcard will have to do.

Thank you for visiting. Please be sure to check my last post for the list of all of the other participants in the blog hop.

I really like the around the world quilt! Adding vehicles around the border will be cool, whatever way you decide to do it! The postcard is neat--I think about making them, but never seem to get it done. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I love your idea of putting things around your trip quilt. Google is my favorite place to search for images. I am sure you can find some things that look like they fit together. You should be able to resize them in a photo program if you have one, or even in a Work document. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

The postcard turned out nicely. Good luck with your applique project. Fingers crossed work backs off enough for you to finish it this year.

Beautiful quilt. I made a transportation quilt for my grandson when he was a toddler that had trains, planes, cars, and sailboats. Thanks so much for sharing your postcard!

Grand quilt. "A Trip Around the World" is perfect for this blog. I've never seen one that wasn't just a scrappy one; I love the colors in yours. The postcard will make a super border.

Trip around the world is an adventure all to itself even with out the transportation on the border. I really like your postcard. I used to make them all the time. I need to get back to them. The recipients all appreciate the thought.

When I taught my mom to quilt, her first quilt was a trip around the world! She loves that pattern so much that each grandchild gets a trip around the world quilt. She is now making each great grandchild a trip around the world quilt. I also love the postcards that you made. Thank you for sharing.
